Eddie Murphy expands his rambunctious style to even wilder heights as he creates the character of Rudy Ray Moore, a raunchy comic from the 70s. Once Moore hit upon his alter ego, he went from being a mediocre comic to an outrageously raunchy character, famous for his XXX rated “party records.” Murphy goes all out in this role and it works, even though this success story never delves into Moore’s personal life. This film deserves the Oscar for Ruth E. Carter’s fantastic, hilarious period wardrobe. So many great suits! Although undeniably coarse, the film is a fascinating trip back in time for those who may remember him. For others, it energetically captures this unique character with boundless ambition, who made a lasting mark on black cinema. NOTE: This is a Netflix production that will be on the big screen until the streaming premiere on 10/24.
