First Love (Hatsukoi)  (review)

Takashi Miike is a prolific Japanese director (more than 60 films in 13 years), but this may be the first to play locally. The story isn’t especially original. It involves a young boxer and the girl he rescues from a typical tale of drugs, gangs and a corrupt cop. Littered between the couple’s interactions are chases and fights, all of which are frenzied, but not special. If this the best example for import of Miike’s work, I don’t see any reason to see more. It’s not bad, just not in any way exceptional. Japanese with subtitles. (Criterion Cinemas only)
