In case you hadn’t heard, Mel Cox of Spang TV has had a challenging year with the illness of her 2 sons. There’s a fund-raising Yard Sale on 5/16.

Henry Street Gallery (422 W. Broad Street) will be featuring grindhouse movies the 2nd Saturday of each month. This week it’s “Turkey Shoot” aka “Escape 2000” and June they’ll show “The Tingler” starring Vincent Price, shown in Percepto Vision. E-mail for details.

The Millwood School is teaching “Film Camp: Back to One” 7/20-31. It’s taught by Diane Lang of Tin Roof Films and is open for school-age students. Contact for details.

The deadline for entries to the 2009 Virginia Screenwriting Competition (presented by the Virginia Film Office) is 5/22 (no entry fee).

Digital Video Group recently installed an AVID Unity system at Metro Productions. Metro also just bought four 6K Space Lights for their studio. Finally, they’re collecting resumes/reels for freelance corporate writer/producer/directors, AVID editors, DPs and graphic artists.  Contact Patrick Bedall.

Virginia Film Tours is now offering ”Where Hollywood Meets History,” highlighting 40 movies shot in the area. The tour is available for parties of 4 or more with Richmond Convention Center and hotel pickup.

In a related event, Helene Wagner (owner/program director of Virginia Film Tours) is presenting a class about the movies shot in Virginia on 7/11, 9-11am, $29. Presented by University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies. (No link provided, so figure it out).

Todd Pankoff, a longtime producer/director in Richmond’s production community, died last week after a long battle with cancer. His son posted this on Facebook.

For the 8th year, I produced the profiles of the Laureates for the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame (which were shown last week at the Hotel Jefferson). You can see who they were and what I did on this link.

People keep asking about the James Franco project, so here’s what the VFO told me:  He shot a student film (required for his degree from NYU) in Suffolk. The location had something to do with a classmate. He brought his own small crew, but used some local extras.

Martin Jones Films, which produced a number of commercials in this area before he moved to Texas, is filing for bankruptcy.

Drew Bolduc, director of “The Taint,” is casting a strong 20-30 year-old female for the lead. Shooting 6/6-14 & the weekend of 6/27. $300 plus a % of the profit. Drew or call Dan 539 8712.

VCU Cinema is casting for 2 shorts. Actors will receive $50-$100 per day, plus meals and a DVD. They’re looking for all ages from kids to seniors. “Hair Grows in Funny Places” shoots 6/15 – 29 and “Steam Heat” shoots 6/17 – 7/1. Send resume/headshots to schedule an audition.

The next Project Resolution is 5/31 at Firehouse Theatre (1609 W. Broad St). The prompt for this month is “Salty Tongue.” Free to screen your work and free to attend the show. Bring your work to have it critiqued by 6:30 (miniDV, DVD, VHS). Show starts at 7.

Joe Cacciotti ran for election on the Eastern AD/UPM Council of the Directors Guild of America and won! He’ll be one of 2 people representing Virginia (Alison Rosa from NOVA is the other).

Studio Squared (a subsidiary of The Martin Agency) is looking for a full-time motion graphics designer to create work for the Walmart Smart Network. AfterEffects and 3D expertise preferred. Contact Chad Alber.

Anybody who was in the Richmond biz in the late 70s/early 80s would remember voice talent Betsy Ames. She moved to DC in the mid-80s and died recently. Here’s the obit in the Washington Post.
