Tales Told In June 2010

Week of June 07, 2010

I’ve posted numerous casting notices for other producers, but this is the first time that I’m doing it for myself. I’m looking for 9 African-American actors (minimum age 40) and one Asian woman. Click here for details.

Saturday night, May Lily Lee was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Regional Emmy Awards, which honors those who have made significant contributions to the broadcast or cable industries in the region over 25 years. Congrats to her and all the other winners

Nick Modisett is relocating to Charlotte. He’ll still be shooting for the Go To Team.

He’s at it again. Kid Richmond was recently in NYC as stunt double for Bill Raymond in a new movie, “Foreclosure.” He had a fight scene with “Sopranos” Michael Imperiolli.

You may remember reading my casting notice several weeks ago. The shoot is done and the “Richmond Times-Dispatch” was there. You can read about it here and see the photo here.

Speaking of ink, director Lucas Krost represented Film Directors in the “Career Exploration” column in last Wednesday’s TD. Can’t seem to find the article on line anymore (so much for their new “enhanced” search.)

Also in the TD, you may have read about the giant new development planned in Caroline County. Did you notice that Park Group’s own Tommy Thompson is one of the major investors?

In another newspaper-related story, animator Dave Gau tried to launch his syndicated cartooning career with “Galapagos” in 1998, but the dream got shelved as his animation business (ShaveFX) grew. He recently found out that he made into the top ten finalists round of “America’s Next Great Cartoonist” contest sponsored by the Washington Post. You can vote for him (before 6/22).

The media connections continue: Long-time Richmonders may remember local news anchor Janet Peckinpaugh. Turns out she’s running for Congress in Connecticut! Here’s a news story.

Last Monday, Governor Bob McDonnell held a ceremonial bill signing for the Motion Picture Tax Credit legislation at St. John’s Church, the site for “Keepers of the Flame,” a new documentary directed by Tim Reid.

The Virginia Film Festival is now accepting entries of features, docs and shorts. Visit the site for details.

Reminder: early bird registration for the Richmond 48 Hour Film Project ends today (6/21).

Stormcatcher Films is seeking cast and crew for their 4th feature (shooting late August and early September). Crew members submit resumes. All positions are being considered. Actors visit this link .

Hongry Wolves Pictures will present a screening of “Laying My Past to Rest” 6/26, 1:00pm at the Byrd Theatre. It’s based on the teen novel by Newport News Gerron DelValle (who also directed). $10.00 in advance (from their site), $15 at the door. View the trailer and purchase tickets online

VMFA’s old Theatre Virginia space is now called the Leslie Cheek Theater and it’s first official duty will be to host Friday Films. “Fried Green Tomatoes” will be presented 7/2 at 6pm and will feature actor (and now Richmond resident) Raynor Scheine, who played Sheriff Curtis Smoote in the movie. If you never met Raynor, this is a chance to see a good movie and have plenty of laughs. Later this summer, Tim and Daphne Maxwell Reid will discuss “Frank’s Place.” Tickets $5 (VMFA members), $7 others. Visit the site to get yours.

The teen talk show “We Got Issues” is holding auditions on 6/30 for on-camera talent. It tapes once a week 8/4 - 9/8. To book your slot, contact Nyya Sistrun .
