Tales from the Grips

March 1998 marks the first anniversary of “Tales from the Grips,” a unique website originating from Richmond that features news and dirt of that city’s production community.

The site’s creator, Jerry Williams, an independent writer/director, learned that every successful website must have one important feature, “You have to give people something. Don’t just expect them to dial up your page if it’s just an advertisement. People already know me as a “gossip central.” So, I took advantage of that reputation (and of my previous skills at publishing newsletters) and created ‘Tales from the Grips’.”

After surfing the net for more than a year, Williams knew he wanted a fast site. “Everybody’s bored by slow-loading graphics or animation. And I definitely didn’t want to include video clips. Our business is based on relationships. If potential clients want to see my work, I want to talk to them, qualify their needs and send them a demo. I don’t want them making a decision based on a few tiny, grainy clips.

“Tales” has been very successful in doing two things: getting people to visit his site and getting the production community to contribute news. After the first year, he’s getting more than 3,000 hits a week. “I’ve helped people line up jobs, sell equipment, re-unite long-lost contacts, even stir a bit of controversy. The most gratifying thing is that people have made ‘Tales’ a part of their Monday morning ritual.” Williams also offers “Poop Alerts” to anyone who registers. “This ensures that readers get the latest hot poop as soon as I find out.”

When you visit “Tales from the Grips,” be sure to explore the links. There’s information on Jerry and his projects, links to other pertinent production sites and even movie reviews. (Jerry used to review movies for a local TV station). And be sure to check back often. Williams concludes, “The site is updated every Monday and I’m getting more hot poop every week!”
