Week of August 23, 2010
This will be the last “Tales” until Mon 9/20 (vacation in Scandanavia).
Just last week, I upgraded my Avid to Media Composer 5.0. In the process, Digital Video Group introduced me to their 2 new guys: David McKendry (their new FCP expert), who’s from NYU’s Film School and produces horror films on the side, and Nik Meinzer, who’s been in Europe for 20 years, last working on Avid systems in Germany with the Armed Forces Network. DVG has also added Autodesk Smoke on Mac to its product line.
You may have seen my tweet on Monday about the screening of “Rock ‘N’ Roll Hotel” or you may have read the article in in Style Weekly . If not, they’ve found a print of this mid-80s 3D film that was shot primarily in Richmond at the Hotel Jefferson. It will be screened 8pm, 8/30 as a benefit for the Byrd Theatre ($10 advance, $15 door). There’s also a VIP package. Click here for tickets. (Darn it! I won’t be in town and won’t post a video of the big event.)
CBS 6 has completed their multi-million dollar upgrade to HD. This makes them the only station in Central Virginia that provides HD video in the field, in addition to the studio.
In collaboration with Tim Reid and his Legacy Media Institute, the VMFA will be staging a special concert at 7pm, 9/2. The principal performers will be the Mendes Brothers from Cape Verde, Africa.
For 20 years, the Rosebud Festival has awarded cash prizes to film and video artists in Virginia, Maryland and DC. Call for entries is now open. Visit the site for details.
Reviews of “Switch,” ("Piranha 3D” later this week), “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “Expendables,” “Other Guys,” “Girl Who Played with Fire,” “The Kids are All Right.” Click here for these reviews and more.
