How to be a Latin Lover (review)

Eugenio Derbez plays as a lazy guy who’s coasted thru life with the titular vocation. After he’s booted from his prosperous relationship, he moves in with his sister (Salma Hayek) and struggles to make a living… or find a new woman. Toss in his cute 10-year-old nephew and you have all the elements of a sweet little comedy. Director Ken Marino is best known for his comic acting. Even though he’s directed TV, this is his first feature and it shows. There’s a lively comic energy thru the film, but the actual jokes are scarce. Many of the talented comic actors are just trying too hard and never manage to be funny. Even with the Latino flair, there’s nothing especially unique or very amusing. (Some of the dialogue is in Spanish with subtitles.)
