Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays a highly successful high school athlete/academic who was rescued/adopted from being a boy soldier in Africa by a white couple (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth). His life seems almost perfect until one of his teachers (Octavia Spencer) begins to question his integrity. This script thoughtfully and slowly develops into something more complex and controversial than it seems at the outset. The actors are all superb and director Julius Onah takes a measured approach that quietly exerts a grip. This is a timely examination of identity and expectation that’s liable to surprise and stimulate conversation. (Criterion Cinemas only)
