Peter and the Starcatcher (review)

THE PLAY: This prequel to Peter Pan creates the characters and establishes the relationships that become the classic tale.

THE PRODUCTION: Instead of dazzling effects, this play relies on low-tech fabrication and rampant imagination. Nathaniel Shaw’s direction flows with robust energy and theatrical precision that elevates the inventive staging to enchanting effect (although I missed a few quips due to the rapid-fire delivery). The uniformly excellent cast not only plays their roles with relish, they provide some of the sets and even sound effects. The inevitable comic standouts include Scott Wichmann, Robert Throckmorton & Paul S. Major. Craig Napoliello’s wood-based set supports the action without much style. BJ Wilkinson’s lighting adds beauty and flair.

THE POINT: Inventive staging and a wonderfully enthusiastic cast generate a theatrical delight.
