Shazam! (review)

A troubled teen (Asher Angel) is living in yet another foster home, when he’s taken into a magical world (DC comics), where he becomes a multi-powered adult superhero (Zachary Levi). He can switch between characters with the uttering of the movie’s title. In addition to the usual tropes and tangles, this film gets most of its comic energy from the teen angle: the 2 best friends are nerds and trying to figure out how to use these recently-acquired powers (and his grown-up body). Although it’s not especially funny and the action sequences aren’t original, the spunky energy and lively characters make it an enjoyable entry to the genre, especially for family audiences. NOTE: There’s one bonus scene after the closing titles, then another (not worth it) after the credits.
