The Oath (review)

Pairing up Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholtz, you’d expect some sort of wild comic romp. Not so here. They play a married couple who live in a disturbingly relevant time, when US citizens are required to sign an oath pledging allegiance to the President. They refuse, but as the deadlines approach, the interactions with their family (and some visitors) get out of control. While this is an interesting subject, the developments turn unexpectedly dark, which makes it even more disturbing. Barinholtz’s manic performance is out of control and he has nobody to blame but himself, since he wrote and directed. There’s just so much over-the-top screaming that it’s hard to sit thru this weirdly twisted social drama.
