Tully (review)

This is the 3rd teaming for writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman (Juno, Young Adult). It’s the 2nd time they’ve joined with Charlize Theron, who literally let herself go for this role. She plays the mom of 2 kids who has a 3rd, so they end up hiring a “night nanny” (a captivating performance by Mackenzie Davis). She’s a temp caretaker who comes in to ease the burden of the newborn on the mother. Their relationship forms the core of the story. First off, the quirky quips that made Juno so sharp are in short supply. While the situations are compelling and the characters have complex relationships, the clever charms are never fully realized and it just goes darker. This character study gives Theron plenty to play with, but the overall effect is disappointing.
